The Next Repair

The utility road climbs through low, stony hills toward steeper mountains. At a culvert, the surface has fallen away far enough to stop a wheeled vehicle. There is room to pass on foot beside the exposed conduit. A maintenance rover waits on the near side, its tool arm folded against its chassis. Above the road, a cairn marks the crest of the highest nearby knoll. From there, you can see the next two bends and a field shelter across the hollow, with an antenna rising from its roof.

A breeze brings the smell of onions cooking in oil. It fades as the wind turns, then returns with a trace of something toasted. Beside the cairn, a flat stone holds down a clear document sleeve. Inside is a folded letter. The address reads, “For whoever next repairs this stretch of road.” Grit has collected along the sleeve’s lower seam, but the paper is dry. No name is visible through the fold. Whoever left it chose a place a repairer could use to look over the work.

Beyond the broken culvert, the road continues toward the shelter before turning uphill. A thin wisp rises beside its doorway and flattens in the wind. The rover has left two narrow tread marks along the verge; both end where it now stands. The letter is within reach beneath its stone, and the smell of cooking comes across the hollow again.
