The Calling Bark

At the edge of the wood, a berry gatherer has set her basket beside a heap of cut fence stakes. A strip of bark lies across its rim. The pale growth on it looks like lichen until one of its branches lifts. The whole branching colony would fit beneath a small ant. Its members join along a common stem, each fine limb ending in a bead that catches the light. The gatherer holds out a reading lens. “Listen before you touch it.”

Close to the bark, a thin ticking resolves into a call: three quick notes, a pause, then three again. Through the lens, a row of clear protective eyelids slides across the colony’s eyes. Dust settles on the closed lids. They lift, and the branches spread. Another call comes from the fence stakes. A third sounds beneath the basket’s handle. The gatherer turns it slowly, keeping the loose bark level. She has already emptied the berries onto her apron. The sound remains.

The path behind her leads out of the trees toward the village. Ahead, the uncut wood is full of small answers, some close enough to find, others too faint to place. She sets the basket down again. There is room on the bark for more of the pale branches. For now, the calls come separately, with enough silence between them to hear which one answers next.
