Clearspring’s Open Workshop

Clearspring begins where the open ground meets the forest. Its streets are small enough to cross in a few minutes, but the paving records many repairs. Dark stones fill one stretch, pale slabs another. At a workshop near the meeting house, a new patch stops exactly at the threshold.

Inside, a craft once forbidden in the village is being practiced openly again. A worker shapes colored glass over a small furnace while an apprentice turns the finished pieces toward the daylight. The doors have been taken off their hinges and leaned against the wall. People passing outside slow to look. One recognizes a tool and asks whether it belonged to the worker’s grandmother.

The elected mayor is due at the meeting house to welcome a group of trainee mediators. Clearspring prepares them for journeys across borders otherwise closed to travelers. Their instructors carry letters from places that agree on little beyond trusting the village’s training. Before the lesson, two students stop at the open workshop. One watches the glass; the other studies the marks left by the removed hinges. The worker sets a finished piece on the sill, where either student could examine it.

What changed enough for the craft to return, and who still has reservations?
