The Unclaimed Plain

The world is a field of impact basins, old craters swallowed by newer ones until their rims resemble broken rings laid across stone. Between them lies a plain so smooth that the first survey pass marks it as missing data. A second pass finds the same shape. Its edges end abruptly against the surrounding rubble. Whatever made it left no gradual slope, no scattered debris, and no obvious road leading in.

No current occupation is detected. There are no visible settlements, no traffic beacons, and no answer to the routine approach call. The survey crew keeps its suits sealed and chooses a waiting orbit rather than treating silence as proof of safety. From there, the plain is only a pale shape against the battered ground. It could be a landing place. It could be something that merely resembles one. For a few minutes, there is time to compare those possibilities without anyone else being involved.

Then another vessel appears on the approach plot. A second follows from a different bearing, and a third begins a slow descent toward the plain. None announced its arrival. None acknowledges the others. The surface still gives every indication of being empty, yet ships that should have no reason to meet are converging on the same quiet patch of stone. Someone aboard each of them apparently knows enough to come.

What drew these ships to the plain, and what happens when one of them lands first?
