The Marker Above the Reeds

Low, hardy plants cover the exposed heath. Between two reed-filled basins, a narrow strip of firm ground carries the crossing. Wind moves the reeds on both sides while the plants along the ridge barely stir. An old marker stands at the near end, tilted enough that someone has wedged a stone beneath its foot.

The surveyors have measured the distance twice. Their line disagrees with the number cut into the marker. One holds the tape while another checks the point from which the old measurement appears to begin. A third has walked down the bank to see whether the marker was moved. She calls the others over, leaving the tape stretched across the ground.

Below the ordinary approach, a second path passes behind a shoulder of earth. Its surface is firm under the plants. It joins the familiar crossing beyond the place where travelers would notice anyone coming up from below. The surveyor has cleared only a hand’s breadth, enough to expose the edges of laid stones. Her companions bring the old measurement with them. From this lower path, the marker’s worn face can no longer be seen.

What changes if the marker was measuring a route that most travelers no longer use?
